They're back!
Fair-Chase
Colorado Archery Buffalo Hunts
Looking for that off-season
bowhunt? Give fair-chase winter buffalo
bowhunting a try. Perhaps no other animal symbolizes
the West as dramatically as the North American Bison or
buffalo. The buffalo is a majestic symbol of the
pioneering spirit that is a part of our collective
heritage. For centuries, Native Americans relied on the
bison to provide them with food, clothing, tools, and
shelter. Now is your chance to bowhunt these historic
animals under fair-chase conditions. What
bowhunter hasn’t wanted to reenact his American heritage
by hunting the majestic North American Bison with bow
and arrow?

Fair Chase Conditions
Through one of our quality
Colorado outfitters, Stick & String Outfitters now
offers fair-chase buffalo bowhunts for those
interested in this historic hunting opportunity. The
Ranch, consisting of 40,000 acres in southeastern
Colorado, has turned free a large herd of Bison in the
Canyons on the ranch the canyons are NOT high fenced and
the Bison are roaming free in the many canyons of the
ranch. This is a hunt! In 2004, for the first time, the
ranch allowed 6 hunters to hunt for the Bulls. All were
successful in finding and harvesting mature SCI Record
Class Bulls and hunts in 2005 and 2006 were equally
successful, including one big bull estimated to be 18
years old!

Want to have a great
trophy and earn it without high fences or corrals? Then
try hunting in the canyons on this ranch. These canyons
are thousands of acres of rock, pinion and cedars. You
will be hunting along with Mule Deer, Whitetails,
Bighorn Sheep, Elk, and all kinds of other animals that
live here.
These buffalo herds are living in
their native habitat. Unlike some buffalo herds, the
buffalo have not been pen-raised but left to their own
to devices to roam and breed naturally. The herds are
free to roam on a huge ranch with little human contact.
Bowhunting will mostly be done by stalking on foot,
which can be very exciting and potentially dangerous due
to the size (up to 2,000 pounds!) and possible
aggressiveness of these animals.
For those not familiar with
buffalo, there is a very real danger element because of
the animal’s quick changing attitude. The best
description of a bison's temperament is UNPREDICTABLE.
They usually appear peaceful, unconcerned, even lazy,
yet they may attack anything, often without warning or
apparent reason. To a casual observer, a grazing bison
appears slow and clumsy, but he can outrun, out turn,
and traverse rougher terrain than all but the fleetest
horse. They can move at speeds of up to thirty-five
miles per hour, and cover long distances at a
deceptively fast lumbering gallop. They are truly a
different type of animal due to their unpredictability,
which is one of the things that make this bowhunt
exciting and challenging.
Bowhunting Method
The terrain is
comprised of canyon-land with stands of pinyon and
cedars, rolling hills with scattered timber pockets,
large rock outcroppings, creek beds, and open
rangeland. Spot and stock hunting on foot will be used
to hunt these animals. “Drives” may also be used by the
guide to push the buffalo past the shooter. Due to the
aggressive nature of these animals, all hunters will be
accompanied by a guide carrying a large caliber rifle.
Hunt Logistics
HUNT DATES: 3 day hunts. Dates to be arranged with the
ranch but November-March generally being the best time
due to good quality hides this time of year. Because
this is a fair-chase bowhunt, you are not
guaranteed an animal. But if you hunt hard on your
3-day hunt and shoot well, you should be able to harvest
an animal. Additional hunt days can be added if
necessary.
Combination hunts for whitetails, mule deer,
elk, predators and prairie dogs are also available.
If an animal is harvested, you
keep the entire animal; meat, horns, skull, cape and
hide. Bison meat is extremely tasty and healthy. Cows
provide the best quality meat but trophy bulls make the
best mounts. We hunt only during the coldest months of
the year so you can be assured of a very nice cape or
hide. Meat processing is also available for an
additional fee.
You will be hunting during the
late fall and winter months so dress accordingly. Snow
may be on the ground this time of year, so you may also
want to bring along some light-colored or white camo
clothing in addition to your regular camo clothing.
Camo clothing should have a large breakup pattern.
If you are flying from out of
state, the closest airports are Denver International
Airport (DIA) and the Colorado Springs Airport. The
drive time from DIA to the hunting area is about 4 hours
from either airport.
Food and Lodging
Lodging and food are included in
the price of the hunt. The ranch has a newly remodeled
ranch house with showers, satellite tv, etc. that makes
for an enjoyable stay during your hunt.
Licenses
Hunting licenses are not
required to hunt buffalo in Colorado.
